- 1. OVERVIEW
-
- 1.0 You are in total control of your team. All decisions, from what
- formation best suits your club's strengths to increasing the seating the
- capacity of your stadium, are in your hands. Some choices, however, have more
- immediate consequences than others. For example, using tired players could
- lead to injury, while investing in old players could lead to huge retirement
- loses.
- What does this all mean? Do not rush through the game. This is not an
- action\shoot 'em up\kill 'em all game. Do not try and play a season in ten
- minutes. Football Fanatic, just like football, is a thinking person's game.
-
- 1.1 THING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT FOOTBALL FANATIC BUT WERE
- AFRAID TO ASK or PLEASE READ THIS FIRST
-
- It's in your best interest to scan the manual quickly. Some key
- functions aren't obvious. If you're having a problem with a certain screen,
- check the index for the screen section and see if there's a key to help you
- out. If that doesn't work call me collect at home.
-
- Football Fanatic does not use a mouse, it is keyboard driven. The manual
- will frequently tell you to "Highlight X <Enter>". What this means is use the
- cursor keys to highlight an option then press the Enter key. Some screen
- allow you to use all four cursor keys, others only left/right or up/down.
-
- The Escape, top left hand of the keyboard, key is also very important.
- When in doubt hit it. Chances are it will return you to the previous screen,
- or cancel an action. If an instruction reads "Highlight X Esc", it means use
- the cursor keys to highlight something then press the Escape key.
-
- One last naughty bit. If something reads "S to sort" or "B for best
- line-up" it means press that letter to do something.
-

- 1.3 THE CHAIRMAN AND YOUR CONTRACT
-
- While your job is to run the club, ultimately you'll have to please the
- chairman. He won't hesitate in giving you his opinion. Don't get too deep
- into debt or he'll start taking matters in his own hands.
- Remember the chairman has the right to fire you if he feels you aren't
- the right person for the job. If he has big expectations, and it seems that
- you're not going to accomplish them, he'll fire you on the spot. From the
- list of painfully obvious facts: don't lose too many games, or go for long
- streaks without a win. Why? you ask. Your job depends on it.
- If your contract is up at the end of the season the chairman may choose
- to renew your contract, or tell you that your services are no longer needed.
- If he doesn't offer you a new contract you may get offers from other teams.
- Examine these offers closely. It might not be in your best interest to take
- the job with highest salary, or go to the team in the highest division.
- If you feel your team is heading towards certain doom (your chairman will
- give you a final warning) by all means resign. You may not find a new team
- right away, but the season continues. You will be denied access to the squad
- and financial options from the main menu until you are hired by another team.
- Next Week <Enter> to keep the season rolling without you.
- Sit back, learn a foreign language or get a new hobby. An offer may
- actually appear during the season. And if doesn't there surely will be
- something at the start of the new season.
- Don't think your chairman is a heartless person, he'll give you a break
- if you just got your team promoted, but remember this guy hired you because
- you were standing around doing nothing.
- If your chairman gives you an ultimatum you better do what he says
- because not only could it mean the end of your career, but the end of the
- game!
-
-
- 2. GETTING STARTED
-
- 2.0 The first step is to start a new game or load a previously saved
- one. If you do not have any saved games in your Footy directory you will not
- be asked whether you want to load a saved game.
- Highlight Start New Game <Enter> to start a new game, or highlight
- Continue Saved Game <Enter> to continue a previously saved game. The third
- option is Quit Game, but you wouldn't want to that, would you?
- If you are loading a game you can load 1 of 5 games. Each saved game
- will have a number in front of it. To continue a saved game, highlight the
- game you wish to continue <Enter>.
-
- 2.1 Every time you start a new game "How It All Began" (the story of how
- you became to be the club's manager) will pop up. Up/down cursor keys to
- scroll through it. Esc to move on.
- You will then be asked if you want to review the on-line manual before
- beginning. Y to view it, N to move on.
-
- 2.2 When starting a new game, Footy will search for additional data files
- -either files you've created or downloaded. If you have any, you will be
- presented with a list. Select the one you want to use.
-
- 2.3 The next step is to select a team. Up/down cursor keys to scroll
- through the teams. The highlighted team will have a fact box and a player
- listing. The fact box includes: team name, country, stadium, and present
- coach's name. The player listing lists the players, position, age, and
- nationality. Highlight the team you want to manage, <Enter>.
-
- 2.4 Football Fanatic has two modes of play: generic and realistic.
-
- Generic mode may either rank and place the top 48 teams in the 3
- divisions at random, or according to our ranking of the top 48 teams. In
- generic mode, you chose which division you want to start in. Highlight the
- division <Enter>.
- Realistic mode ranks the top 48 teams according to domestic and cup
- performances over the last five years. Should you choose Ajax and play the
- realistic version, you will begin in the 1st division. Should you select a
- team that is not in the top 48, your team will be placed in the 16th in
- the 4th division.
-
- 2.5 Enter your name. The team's present coach's name is the default.
- Back space to erase it, then enter yours <Enter>. Enter your sex: M for male,
- F for female. Enter currency you wish to use: D for dollars, P for pounds.
-
- 2.6 A box will now appear with the chairman's demands. Take these
- demands seriously. Failure to fulfill them will result in your termination.
-
- 2.7 The next screen will show the upcoming season's sponsors. The
- company's name, weekly amount, and weeks left on the contract are listed.
-
- 2.8 The last stop is the import list. If your team has any imports they
- will be listed.
-
- 3. OFF SEASON MENU
-
- There are two kinds of off seasons: an off season without cup games, and
- with cup games. Depending where you finish in your league standings, you may
- qualify for the Toto Cup.
- In first season you will not be involved in the tournament, but you will
- have the option of playing friendlies.
-
- The middle of the off-season menu will resemble the following.
-
- 1. Squad Related
- 2. Scouting & Transfers
- 3. Financial
- 4. Statistics
- 5. Next Week*
-
- * If you qualify for the Toto Cup or are playing a friendly this
- will read
- Play Cup game, or Play Friendly
-
- 3.1 SQUAD RELATED
-
- Highlighting Squad Related <Enter> opens the door to the most important
- aspects of coaching. From here you will make line-up decisions, promote
- players from the reserve and youth teams, place players on the transfer list,
- and a wide variety of other choices.
-
- The first screen will have a column on the left, and a main body. The
- column on the left shows your team, division and position, record for the
- season, your next opponent, and command keys. The main body lists your
- starters and bench players, and their respective ratings.
-
- 3.2 COMMAND KEYS
-
- Command keys information is located at the bottom left hand of the
- main squad screen. The commands keys are left/right cursor keys, B, I, S, T,
- tab, ALT-C, and ALT-A.
-

- screen. Variations are:
- Form Total Stamina Energy
- Skill Strength Confid(ence) Energy
- Goals Games Goals Cup Games (cup)

-
- B places your best eleven (11) into the starting line-up. Injuries,

- a player
-
- -4th page, top name, position
-
- -4th page, rest past teams (year played and team name)
-
- 3.3 CHANGING LINE-UP
-
- To move a player from the starting line-up to the bench highlight
- the player's name with the cursor keys <Enter>. The average of your line-up
- will scroll across the screen between the starting line-up and bench players.
- Highlight the player you wish to exchange him with <Enter>. After the swap
- the new average will scroll across the screen.
-
- 3.4 TAB
-
- The Tab key activates a pop up menu covering the let hand column.
- From the menu you can choose Formation, Tactics, Reserve, Practice, Opponents,
- Injuries, and Contracts by highlighting the option <Enter>. They can also be
- accessed directly with number keys 1 through 7.
-
- 3.41 Choosing what formation to play is almost as important as setting
- your starting line-up. Obviously, you want to play the formation that best
- suits your team's strength. If you have several good fullbacks, and few good
- strikers, a more defensive system would be your best choice. Each system has
- advantages and disadvantages.
- At the bottom of the Formation menu there are 3 options: Choose
- Formation, Pick Custom Formation, and Edit Custom Formation. The middle of
- the screen shows half the pitch and where your players are positioned.
- To change the formation highlight Choose Formation <Enter>. There are 11
- standard formations to choose from. Each formation offers 5 variations. Use
- the left and right cursor keys to toggle the variations. Highlight the
- formation you wish to use <Enter>.
-
- 3.42 Tactical decisions play an important role in the game's outcome.
- There are 9 tactics to customise your style of play: tackling, marking,
- possession, passing, attack, shooting, free kicks, corner kicks, and style.
- To change a tactic highlight the option with the cursor keys, <Enter> until
- your choice appears.
- Player assignments will be automatically assigned. They can be changed
- by highlighting the Player Assignment. Up/down cursor keys to highlight the
- players, <Enter> to cycle through the players. Esc when done.
-
- 3.43 The Reserve option accesses the reserve team as well as the youth
- squad. From here you can move players from the main and reserve squads, swap
- players from the main and reserve squads, examine the youth team, and
- customise your reserve options. To move a player from the
- reserve team to the main squad, or vice versa, highlight Move Player <Enter>.
- Highlight the name of the player you wish to move <Enter>. Press Y to
- transfer player, N to abort. To swap players highlight Swap Player <Enter>.
- Highlight one of the players you want to swap <Enter>. You will then be
- asked, "Swap with which player?" Highlight the other player's name, <Enter>
- to complete the swap.
- To see if you have any upcoming stars highlight Youth Team <Enter>. To
- get more information on a youth team player highlight the player and press I.
- To promote a player to the reserve squad highlight Promote Player <Enter>.
- Highlight the player you wish to promote <Enter>. You will the be asked
- "Promote this player?". Y completes the transaction, N aborts. You can
- promote players seventeen (17) years of age and older, and only as many
- players as there are spots available on the reserve team.
- The Reserve and Youth Options allow you to customise your organisation.
- From either the Reserve or Youth menu highlight Reserve or Youth Options
- <Enter>. With the cursor keys, select Playing Style, Focus, or Player
- Development. If your main squad plays an attacking style,
- there is little point to having your youth and reserve teams train in a 5-3-2.
- Selecting Focus is not as clear cut as Playing Style. Your choice will come
- down to your coaching philosophy. The players you choose to develop depends
- on your needs and playing style. If you play five midfielders you will need
- more midfielders than strikers and fullbacks. One hint, it pays to have
- your Reserve and Youth Options work in co-ordination with each other and the
- main squad.
-
- 3.44 Practice. There are 10 different kinds of practice:
-
- Attacking: players work in the offensive third of the pitch
- By Position: players work at their respective positions
- Set Pieces: players work on corner kicks and free kicks
- Passing: players sharpen their passing and distribution skills
- Ball Control: players work on their touch
- Stamina: players work on their stamina
- Shooting: players work on their finishing
- Defending: players work in the defensive third of the pitch
- Scrimmage: practice game
- Sprints: players work on their speed
-
- There are 4 kinds of practice sessions: light, normal, intense, and two.
-
- Highlight the type of practice you want to run <Enter>. Highlight Start
- Practice <Enter>. Highlight style of practice to run <Enter>.
- Use the Available option to give certain players the day off. Highlight
- Available <Enter>. Highlight the player(s) you want to rest <Enter>. Esc to
- move back to the practice menu.
- Your assistant coach will often have some useful suggestions. Highlight
- Advice <Enter> to get some advice.
-
- After practice your assistant will summarise every player's performance.
-

- opponent's squad, formation, and club history. Cagey managers will scout
- their opponents to determine what players and line-up to use.

- cursor keys to scroll through seasons)
-
- -3rd page, top right championships won, number of seasons played in
- divisions and cups

-
-
- 3.46 When players get injured, and they will, examine their status with
- the Injuries option. The player's name, type of injury, rehabilitation
- progress, and weeks until return, are listed on top. The team doctor and
- skill level and available facilities are listed on the bottom.
- How quickly player recuperate depends on your doctor's skill, facilities,
- and funding. To prescribe extra treatment for a player highlight player
- <Enter>. There are 3 kinds of treatment: extra physiotherapy, extra medical
- attention, and surgery. Depending on the injury, surgery or extra medical
- attention might not be an option. Highlight option <Enter>.
- Extra medical attention can be costly, and does not guarantee a faster
- recovery. After the type of treatment has been selected you will be presented
- with a bill. You can accept the bill and go on with the treatment, or refuse
- it and let the player recover at his own pace. Y accepts the bill, N refuses
- treatment.
-
- 3.47 Contracts lets you renegotiate the contracts of your players, place
- them on the transfer list, loan them to another club, or release them. S to
- sort players list. The list can be sorted by: value, skill, salary, goals this
- season, games this season, goals for the club, games for the club, age, and
- position. The bottom right hand of the screen indicates how the player are
- being sorted. Left/right cursor keys to change the information at the top of
- the screen.
- Skill Age Status Week Salary Value
- Country Club Games Club Goals Total Games Total Goals Bought (paid)
-
- Highlight player's name <Enter>. Select one of the following by
- highlighting <Enter>: Transfer List/Unlist, Loan List/Unlist, Renegotiate
- Contract, and Release.
- Transfer List/Unlist will either place a player on the transfer market or
- remove him from it. If placed on the transfer market, he will be removed from
- the squad list once the next week has been completed. He cannot be removed
- from the transfer market thereafter. He can only return to your team once the
- season is completed and his contract has been renegotiated.
- Loan List/Unlist announces that you accepting offers for the player's
- services. A player listed to be loaned will remain with the club until you
- accept an offer. The player will return to your club once his contract with
- the other club is finished.
- A player's contract can only be renegotiated during the first 4 weeks of
- the off-season. If you haven't renegotiated his contract by the end of the
- four weeks you will be notified to do so.
- You have one of three options during the negotiations: Reject, Accept,
- and Stop. Highlight accept <Enter> to accept the terms.
- Highlight reject <Enter> to submit your terms. Once rejected, you can
- change the length of the contact (Years), whether the player will be allowed
- to leave to play internationals (Int'ls), his weekly wage (Salary), and the
- size of his signing bonus (Incentive). The total value of the contract will
- be listed at the end. Left/right cursor keys to highlight the condition you
- wish to negotiate, and up/down cursor keys to change the terms. You can only
- add or subtract one year to the contract, and, depending on the agent, will
- pay a great deal to do so. Asking a player to reject an offer to play an
- international will also be a very expensive proposition. Highlight accept
- <Enter> to accept the terms of the contract. Stop <Enter> ends the
- negotiations and places the player on the transfer market.
-
- 3.5 SCOUTING AND TRANSFERS
-
- 3.51 Highlight View Transfer List <Enter> to view players currently on
- the transfer market. A player list will appear with the following information

- Seasons Played, and Salary. S sorts the list by: position, skill, rating,
- value, age, goals, games played, and country.

- willing to join your team, he will present his contract demands through his
- agent. Pay close attention to who his agent is! Agent have patterns. Learn
- these patterns and you might be able to save yourself some money.
- If he agrees to the purchase you must negotiate a contract. You have one
- of three options during the negotiations: Reject, Accept, and Stop. Highlight

- 5. CUPS
-
- There are four cups in Footy: EFL Cup, Elite Cup, Toto Cup, and World
- Club Cup.
-
- In Cup matches, if a winner hasn't been decided after regulation time,
- the teams will play two 15 minute halves. If there is still no winner then
- the game will be decided by penalty shoot-out.
-
- Cup scores may resemble Team A (2)+ 3:3 (2) Team B. What that jumble
- means: (2) and (2) mean that after regular time the game ended in a 2:2 tie.
- 3:3 indicates the score after extra time. The "+" designates that Team A won
- the penalty shoot-out.
-
- 5.1 EFL Cup is played during the regular season. Weeks 2/4, 7/9, 12/14,
- 17/19, 22/24 and the final on week 30. Every team in the EFL participates.
- The format is a two leg series, home and away. The final is one game played
- on a neutral pitch. Series are decided by total goals. Penalty shots are
- used if the series is tied after second game.
-
- 5.2 The Elite Cup is it played during the regular season, weeks 8, 16, 26
- and 31. Only teams in the first division are involved. The format is a one
- game. Penalty shots can decide winner. The final is played on a neutral
- pitch
-
- 5.3 The Toto Cup is it played during the off season. Round 1 on weeks 5,
- 6, 7, Round 2 on weeks 9, 10, 11. Round 3 on weeks 13, 14, 15. The final on
- week 17. The 4th, 5th and 6th place finishers from each division plus four
- European guest teams make up the tournament.
- The format is a round robin. 4 sections of 4 teams. The top 2 teams
- advance. The top 8 are then divided into 2 divisions. The play another round
- robin. The top 4 move on. The last 4 play one more round robin. The final
- two teams play one game for Toto Cup.
- Players are not cup-tied in the Toto Cup because so many players are
- transferred in the off-season.
-
- 5.4 The World Club Cup is played in week 17 of off season. The top
- finisher from the 1st division plays one game against an international squad
- for the title.
-
- 6. ODDS AND ENDS
-
- 6.1 C accesses the Configuration Menu at the main screen. Configure the
- game to tailor the information you receive. Up/down cursor keys to highlight
- the option you want to change. Right/left cursor keys to toggle the option on
- or off.
-
- 6.2 Here is a run down of how the bookings get added up.
-
- - If a player receives two yellow cards in a match he will be
- credited for having received 1 yellow and 1 red, not 2 yellow
- cards.
-
- - 1 match suspension after a player's 3rd and 5th yellow card of the
- season and 1st and 2nd red card.
-
- - 2 match suspension after a player's 7th and 9th yellow card of the
- season, and 3rd and 4th red card.
-
- - 3 match suspension - after a player's 11th yellow card of the
- season, 4th red card, and every subsequent red card
-
- Transferred players take their card and suspension count with them when
- they go to a new team.
-
-
- 6.3 About the Game Engine
-
- Use the engine to gain greater control over the game action.
-
- Before the start of the game, you are presented with some information
- such as attendance, the referee, both team's records and players that will
- unavailable for the match.
- During the game you have four screens: your opponent's player info, your
- players' info, match stats and goalscorer information. Use the left/right
- cursor keys to change screens.
- The match stats screen is perhaps the most important screen during the
- match. It shows minute-by-minute highlight of the match.
- Here is a list of some of the key strokes.
-
- - <Enter> to skip to the next minute
- - up/down cursor keys to vary the delay between each match minute (in
- seconds)
- - 1 to jump to the next goal
- - 2 to jump to the end of the half
- - 3 to jump to the end of the match
- - 0 (zero) to cancel jump and return to minute-by-minute
- - S to change a player's position
- - Space - substitute player(s)
- - F to change formation
-
- To make a substitution, press the spacebar. As soon as the ball is out
- of play you'll be able to substitute players. You'll then be presented with a
- list of players on the pitch. Highlight the player which you wish to
- substitute <Enter>. You'll then see a list of players on the bench.
- Players who are unavailable appear in gray. Highlight the player you want to
- sub on <Enter>. You'll be asked if you wish to sub in the player. Press Esc to
- cancel the substitution at any time. You can substitute your goalkeeper once
- and substitute a maximum of 3 field players. If one of your players gets
- seriously injured and you already have made your maximum number of
- substitutions, you won't be able to replace him.
- You can also change formations during the match. This involves shouting
- instructions to your players and may take some time until you get their
- attention. You're limited by how many you times you can change formation. Be
- careful in changing the field formation, change it too drastically and you may
- suffer. To signal a formation change press F.
- At half-time and, in case of extra-time, at end of regular time you'll
- also have the opportunity to substitute players.
- If at end of extra-time the match is still undecided, the game will go to
- penalty-kicks. Select seven players to take them.
-
- 6.4 Cup Tied Players
-
- A player is considered cup-tied if he played a cup game in the regular
- season (EFL or Elite Cup) for a team other than his current team. Footy will
- let you know when you have a player in this situation by giving you a message
- and in the squad screen he will have a white lowercase "c" next to his name.
-
- 6.5 International Players
-
- A player is considered an international if:
-
- 1. he was not born in a European Community country (excluding
- Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland), or
-
- 2. he is European but his country does not have a club in the EFL.
- Note, the definition of a domestic player can change from year to
- year as teams get introduced or dropped from the EFL. It's a
- good idea to know who will join the EFL in the next season, so
- you can buy an international player which next season will be
- considered domestic, or
-
- 3. he was not born in Europe
-
-
-
